Abstract

The winners of athletic competitions in Ancient Greece excelled, especially in religious life. In this regard, the island of Thasos is a noteworthy example, where the athlete Theogenes had a remarkable biography. He reached the status of a deified hero, to whom the Thasians erected monuments and made honorific sacrifices. These are conclusions drawn from analyzing literary, epigraphic and archaeological evidences from research developed by eminent Hellenists
