Abstract

This article aims to discuss the professional practices of Brazilian pharmacists - working on pharmacies - who participated of the research A socio-anthropological investigation about pharmacies: position of pharmacists and clerks on emergency contraception, a broader survey carried out from 2012 to 2014, aiming to know about pharmacists and clerks’ perceptions and practices over emergency contraception in the country. This paper addresses the participants’ sociodemographic profile and their work dynamics in the private establishments in which they work as pharmacists. The data collection was performed throughout an anonymous, self-administered on-line questionnaire, that was available on the DataSUS/FormSUS Platform. The disclosure of the study was supported by professional class entities. 383 pharmacists participated voluntarily (n=383), from which 74.5% were female and 25.5% were male. Most of them, men and women, were up to 30 years old (61.3%), constituting a young group of professionals, graduated not more than five years ago (65%) in private pharmacy colleges. The southeastern region of the country congregates 64.9% of the respondents, followed by the southern region, with a percentage of 16.4%. Regarding the professional practice, 80% of the pharmacists worked as technical managers. Their activities, professional updating and the challenges of their work environment in allowing them to dedicate themselves to the dispensation of medicines are also addressed, providing a reflection that seeks to value such professional practice among the population. It was observed that the clinical attributions of pharmacists are constrained in the drugstore space due to the expansion and increase of the drug retail trade.
