Abstract

This article is a summary about the development of the social and human sciences in health in teaching and research in Brazil, since their implementation in the 1960s until the present moment. There are considerations about their specificities at the different levels of teaching, and also in the researched themes and in the academic institutions where they were implemented. It approaches questions like the academic productivity criteria as evaluation standard and specific demands of the social and human sciences in health, as well as the importance of interdisciplinarity and the requirements of the professionals' profiles to adapt to this type of interlocution in Public Health.
