Call For Papers - ABEI Journal 27.1 Special Issue: 50 Years of Diplomatic Relations Between Brazil and Ireland
The Brazilian Association of Irish Studies invites diplomats, scholars and postgraduate students to contribute to a special edition celebrating 50 years of diplomatic relations between Brazil and Ireland. This issue, to be published in September 2025, commemorates a half-century of cultural, academic, and diplomatic exchanges between these two nations.
Brazil and Ireland established diplomatic relations in 1975. Since then, the political dialogue between these countries has been fruitful. The opening of the Brazilian embassy in Dublin in 1991 and of the Irish embassy in Brasília in 2001 marked important milestones in the strengthening of this bilateral relationship.
The cultural and academic ties between Brazil and Ireland have been significantly enriched by the efforts of Professors Munira Mutran and Laura Izarra, pioneers in advising and teaching postgraduate courses on Irish literature in Brazil. Their groundbreaking work helped to establish Irish studies as a field of scholarly inquiry in the country, creating opportunities for students and academics to engage with Irish culture, literature, and history. Their leadership also led to the creation of the Brazilian Association of Irish Studies (ABEI) in 1989 and of the W. B. Yeats Chair of Irish Studies at the University of São Paulo in 2009, further strengthening the intellectual and cultural links between Brazil and Ireland. Over the years, the University of São Paulo had the honour to receive the official visits of Presidents Mary Robinson in 1995, Mary McAleese in 2004, and Michael D. Higgins in 2012, Taoiseach Bertie Ahern in 2001, Ceann Comhairle Seán Ó Fearghail in 2019, and more recently, various Ministers to celebrate St. Patrick's Day in Brazil.
As we mark this milestone, the ABEI Journal seeks to honor and critically reflect on the rich legacy of diplomatic relations between Brazil and Ireland while envisioning pathways for continued exchange and cooperation in the future.
The ABEI Journal is peer-reviewed and committed to establishing a dialogue between Brazil and Ireland. It is aimed at scholars, independent researchers, and postgraduate students in Irish studies. The ABEI Journal is indexed by Cambridge Scientific Abstracts (CSA), Maryland, USA and Modern Language Association (MLA), EBSCO, Directory of Open Access Journals (DOAJ), Diretório de Políticas Editoriais das revistas científicas brasileiras (Diadorim), Latindex and Google Scholar. It is published twice a year – a general issue and a special issue with guest editors – and co-edited with the support of the University of São Paulo and the ESP Programme (Embassy of Ireland in Brazil).
