Abstract

Using as a starting point Hilda Sabato's article, "Popular Sovereignty, Citizenship, and Nation-Building in Nineteenth Century Spanish America: The Republican Experiment", the paper discusses citizenship's social basis in Latin America. It also make's use of T.H. Marshall to emphasize the tension between equality of rights, associated with citizenship, and social inequality. Finally, it suggests that Sabato's work can help understand this tension historically.
