A structural line ESE-WNW oriented named Paranapanema had a strong influence during the Paraná sedimentary basin tectonic evolution from the Upper Carboniferous to the dose of Mesozoic. During this time onlap of stratigraphic units indicates this region as a marginal one dividing the basin in two sub-basins with different tectonic behaviour. Cenazoic reactivation of the ancient fault lines with sedimentation in isolated basins indicates that the same processes were acting until recent times.
