Abstract

For this research, 43 pieces of crossbred dogs were used; 30 of them were injected with coloured solution of Neoprene latex 450, fixed in formalin and used to study the patterns of the arteries of the basis of the encephalon. The remaining 13 pieces were treated with injection of vinyl acetate in the commom carotid artery and acid corrosion. Peculiar disposition of the branches of the internal carotid artery, and of the terminal branches of the basilar artery determinates the building of an arterial circuit that shows a constant rostral convex. The caudal part of this
arterial circuit has a pyriform (56,6%) or a polygonal (43,3%) shape. It is formed rostrally by the right and left cerebral arteries, laterally by the caudal and rostral branches of the right and left internal carotid arteries, and caudolaterally by the right and left terminal branches of the basilar artery. The vascular pattern of the arteries of the basis of the encephalon of the studied dogs can be placed referred between types 2a and 2B, as referred by De Vriese3 (1905), and between the medial and final stages of its filogenetic development, as considered by Testut13 (1911).
