Resumo

O principal propósito deste artigo é apresentar e discutir algumas das ideias mais relevantes da extensa e intensa obra de John Goodlad (1920-2014) no que se refere a questões relacionadas com a renovação e a melhoria da educação, das escolas e da sociedade democrática e social. Por meio da leitura e da consulta de alguns dos seus textos reconhecidamente mais influentes, foi possível, por um lado, produzir uma breve síntese biográfica do autor e, por outro, identificar algumas das linhas mestras que orientaram o seu pensamento e a sua ação cívica. As suas pesquisas e a sua incansável luta para melhorar a educação e a democracia, que perspetivava numa relação simbiótica, foram sempre orientadas pela ideia de que o conhecimento sociológico crítico e profundo das escolas é uma condição indispensável para a sua renovação e melhoria. E esse é, muito provavelmente, o seu mais fundamental legado.
