Resumo

This research analyzes the effects of social economics variables on the probability to consume goods and services related to health, leisure, tourism and others by families whose head is an elderly and families without any elderly member. Age, income, education, family strueture, local residence area and other exogenous variables were analyzed as the determinants of consumption, using a family budget survey from 1995/96 and logit models. Increases in family's size increase the probability to acquire the majority of goods and services. As expected, the greater is the family income, the higher is the consumption, and as the individual gets older, the probability to spend on health services and goods increases. It was observed as well a reduetion in the consumption of tobacco as the family's head levei of education increases.
