O objetivo deste artigo é examinar a demografia da escravidão em Minas Gerais entre 1750 e 1808, salientando como a mudança demográfica pode ajudar a compreender as modificações na estrutura da força de trabalho escrava ocorrida com o declínio da mineração. . A questão da reprodução escrava, central para os estudos sobre a escravidão no Brasil
e em outras partes, será cuidadosamente analisada. Também será apresentado o primeiro estudo sistemático dos valores de cativos em Minas Gerais durante a segunda metade do século XVIII, ao esgotar-se o boom nas exportações de minério.
