Belon, the birds and the bones: translation of Chapter XII of the Histoire de la nature des oyseaux (1555)

The French scholar Pierre Belon (1517-1564), during the Renaissance period in the same way as his coeval colleagues, dedicated himself to the study of various aspects of the natural world. However, he became best-known for an illustration presented on his book L’histoire de la nature des oyseaux research in which he calls attention to the anatomic similarities between the skeletons of birds and men. This paper’s main objective is to make Belon’s chapter of the Histoire de la nature des oyseaux (1555), comparing humans and avian skeletons, more accessible to Portuguese speakers. It also contains some information about his life, work and the reception of his ideas. We hope that this paper can contribute to the spreading of Belon’s ideas and context.
