"Les origines de la tauromachie remontent à la nuit des temps. Rite de fécondité, mythe, fête rurale, rite de passage, exercice cynégétique, spectacle urbain, joute aristocratique, jeu collectif ou exploit individuel, ... Le face-à-face entre l’homme et le taureau a pris au long des siècles des formes très diverses, dans un double processus de transformation et de fusion qui a abouti à la corrida moderne.
C’est à l’aube de la modernité, à la charnière entre les XVe et XVIe siècles, que la fête taurine-spectacle, ancêtre de la corrida, dessine ses contours à partir de pratiques taurines très diverses, présentes sur une large géographie ibérique et dont certaines variantes s’étendent même au nord des Pyrénées."
