Abstract

The beauty of death in Sparta was regarded as a sign of virtue and admiration for citizens and enemies alike. But how to understand the concept of beauty solely from within the Spartan society? The main objective of this article is to claim that understanding the beautiful Spartan death requires the modern aesthetic concept of "sublime". The warrior to achieve the beauty of death has to link it to the sublimity of his doing.
