Resumo

The figures of analogy in Search of Lost Time by Marcel Proust supports the implicit symbolism and what is unexpressed in its literal sense. Proustian writing indeed uses metaphors referring to animal kingdom to describe aristocrats’ mediocrity and nonsense and European high society lifestyle. While the subject of the metaphor symbolizes an aristocrat, the phore of the same figure refers to an animal and thus invites the reader to decipher intentions implied on the text. Thanks to the grouping of the identified animal figures, we have found that implied criticism of aristocrats and the great bourgeois is done by a matching with the bodies of animals, parts of their bodies or their gesture. The symbolism of these figures allows to convey a hidden thought in the text that might be Proust’s himself who once lived and admired the large aristocratic receptions before he decided to withdraw from this world and devote himself to the achievement of his work.
