Female variations: Circuits of the trans universe in Paraíba

In this article we describe the results of an ethnographic study held between 2009 and 2011, concerning to transvestites, transsexuals and transformist's trajectories and sociability in Paraíba, Brazil. The investigation analyzed circuits that pass townships on different scales, including rural and indigenous areas that interconnect and create disruptions: the prostitution, the beauty contests (Miss Gay and Top drag queen) and LGTB movement (lesbian, gay, bisexuals, transvestites and transsexuals). Beauty contests and prostitution networks comprise a set that gives visibility to bodies and persons who perform a mimetic play with the feminine universe where public participation is essential. They build up models of beauty that proj- ect themselves in metropolitan styles and flighty femininity, a complement to homosexuality. In contrast, the subjects of LGBT movement seeking to respond to these standards of beauty but them triggering circuit of competitions on strategic occasions, such as gay pride parades, which have been irradiated from the town to the countryside.
