Resumo

Business Ecology fills a vacuum in the field of Administration and enlarges the list of issues to be mastered by the economist. More specifically for management theory, the boundaries of knowledge cover the firm as a whole, following a detailed review of all its internal aspects. The firm's external side has not been studied at all except by other areas, such as microeconomics, but always in a very unsatisfactory manner for the business manager, this being due to the fact that it has not been based on the same assumptions and has not had identical purposes. Scientific knowledge can not be bounded or limited. Management theory must reach beyond the firm, enlarge the boundaries of this knowledge and consolidate the existing knowledge in the more traditional areas. Economic theory, especially microeconomics, receives an important contribution from Business Ecology, and this is a step forward in the understanding of econimic activities. The authors believe that Business Ecology may exceed expectations because it offers new approaches to several economic problems, such as, for example, the evolution of the business environment and its related consequences for economic development.
