Benefits and difficulties of the CMM model for software process improvement

Abstract

Results achieved by organizations by implementation of the CMM, Capability Maturity Model, in their software processes were analyzed. An empiric survey was carried out in three Brazilian organizations using case studies. In general, it was possible to ascertain that benefits and difficulties cited in references were found in practice; however some key points of the model deserve special attention. According to information disclosed during the interviews conducted, the model was also broadly criticized.
