Abstract

Business competition has required a high level of professionalism and skill from management leadership in companies. The need for professional training of these managers may be even greater in family businesses because they often face difficulties during succession especially in distinguishing between the roles of heir and successor. An analysis of maturity in the succession process is presented based on interviews with family business managers and a model that includes best practices. The model was created based on a review of literature as well as the opinions of experts on pertinent technical and behavioral aspects. The final version of the model has been recognized as an orientation to the current situation of succession, highlighting strengths, weaknesses and actions taken by management. Results show that managers have recognized the value of the model to evaluate the situation of the succession process in their enterprises.
