Abstract

The objective of this study is to describe the commitment of employees who work in civil construction companies in the metropolitan region of Belo Horizonte, in accordance with the approach of Meyer and Allen (1991) applied in a gender perspective. A questionnaire and interview were the main techniques for data collection. Quantitative analysis was done with univariate, bivariate and multivariate statistics. Content analysis was used for treatment of  qualitative data. Quantitative results showed higher averages for the affective dimension, followed by normative and instrumental dimensions with men obtaining higher scores compared to women. At least one group of non-committed was evident among men, while among women all groups were committed to the organization. Qualitative results suggest that the motives that lead men and women to commit to the organization in this segment are not only different, but antagonistic. Men are more committed affectively due to factors related to remuneration, exercise of power, autonomy and pride to do a job that they consider to be a work of art. However for women, work represents the opportunity to enter into a market almost exclusively male, thereby providing an opportunity to acquire knowledge and career advancement.
