Organization life cycles: longevity and mortality of micro and small industries in Contagem - Minas Gerais, Brazil

Abstract

This study identified the stage of Organizational Life Cycle of micro and small industrial enterprises in Contagem, MG focusing on business longevity according to Adizes (1990). A quantitative field research was made of 17 companies from the portfolio of a financial institution. Data was collected by a closed questionnaire with a Likert scale of five. Analysis used a nonparametric descriptive approach to determine Middle Ranking and measure agreement among characteristics. Results show that companies up to two years old are in the second stage. Those from two to five years did not have a defined stage, varying from the second to fifth stages and ones with more than five years are in the fifth stage and present positive characteristics of earlier stages. Due to study limitations, extension is suggested to the entire population
