Abstract

An analysis was made of the management graduate student evaluations of the course requirement of scientific production, especially in the monograph discipline. A survey of literature on the subject defined these important aspects: interest in the monograph discipline (interest); interest in the academic career (career); educational and professional impact of the discipline (impact); ability to write a monograph (ability) and need for the discipline in the course (necessity). A field study collected these returns from 124 students of institutions of higher education in the city of Fortaleza. Data were evaluated by means of descriptive, regression and cluster analysis techniques. Results disclosed that: (1) there was an aversion to the discipline; (2) interest was influenced by the perception of the impact and necessity of the discipline and (3) in the three groups identified by cluster analysis, three out of every five students were critical of the monograph discipline whereas the others were basically satisfied. These results, while limited for this type of sampling, may be useful for educational planning.
