Abstract

In the early 20th century, the Germanists Friedrich Gundolf and Herbert Cysarz sought to reflect on the relation between the historical world and eternity. Inserted in the crisis of the historicist paradigm, both Germanists sought to respond to this crisis, which had as its center the pragmatic function of historical knowledge for everyday practical life. This article analyzes Gundolf and Cysarz's reflections on time and eternity relating them to the formative function of historical knowledge, condensed in Bildung's neo-humanist concept. In this sense, we analyze the theoretical and philosophical influences of both authors and the epistemological consequences of their considerations based on the interdisciplinary relationship between German studies and History
