Author Guidelines

1. General Information

The Journal Música is published twice a year.

·       Issue #1 : published in July (submissions due by May 15th)

·       Issue #2 : published in December (submissions due by October 15th)

These deadlines ensure adequate time for the editorial process. Thematic dossiers and Special Issues may have their own schedules and guidelines, which will be announced in specific calls for papers. Before submitting a paper, always consult the Calls for Papers available on the Journal's website.

2. Editorial Policies

·       Submission of more than one article per author/co-author is not permitted for the same issue.

·       Articles by the same author or co-author are not accepted in consecutive issues of the Journal.

Copyright and originality

Authors with accepted papers should submit:

·       Declaration of assignment of rights (print and electronic publication, on an exclusive basis).

·       Declaration of originality.

The authors retain the right to reuse their texts in future anthologies.

Responsibility

·       The opinions expressed in the published texts are the sole responsibility of their authors.

·       The statements and concepts expressed, as well as the accuracy of the information provided, are the sole responsibility of the authors.

3. Submission Types

3.1 Articles

·       Between 4,500 and 25,000 words (excluding pre-textual and post-textual elements).

3.2 Reviews

·       Up to 4,500 words.

·       They should deal with works published no more than 2 years ago.

·       They should include a full reference to the work at the beginning.

·       They must present a critical analysis and contextualization of the work within the field of research.

3.3 Translations

·       They must include formal authorization from the copyright holders.

·       For works in the public domain , a statement from the translator must be attached.

3.4 Interviews

·       These interviews should feature individuals directly or indirectly related to music, who are prominent in their field.

·       The interview topic should relate to areas of research interest in music and related fields.

·       In the case of thematic dossiers, it is desirable that the interview be related to the dossier's theme.

·       Interview submissions must be accompanied by the interviewee's authorization.

·       They should include an introductory text contextualizing the interview.

·       Recommended length: 2,000 to 8,000 words (flexible, subject to evaluation).

3.5 Other formats

·       The Música Magazine occasionally publishes sheet music , provided it relates to artistic and academic research processes or has historical relevance. Consult the magazine's editors to discuss the feasibility of publishing a score.

4. Evaluation Process

4.1 Articles

·       Articles are submitted to double-blind peer review .

·       The manuscript should be submitted without identifying the author.

·       Author information should only be included in the registration profile.

·       Self-citations should be replaced with “XXXX” in the submitted version.

4.2 Other formats

·       Reviews, translations, interviews, and sheet music are evaluated by the Editorial Team without being sent to external reviewers.

5. Author Registration and Metadata (Completion in the Journal's system)

Metadata must be entered exclusively in the system fields , including:

Name

·       Full name (use only the last name; e.g., Silva , not da Silva ) .

·       Institutional affiliation (in full, without acronyms or translation) .

·       Country

·       E-mail

·       ORCID (when available)

Affiliation

·       Write it out in full, without abbreviations or translation.

·       Structure from largest to smallest:

o   Example: Universidade de São Paulo. Faculdade de Filosofia, Letras e Ciências Humanas.

Biography

·      This section is for a brief summary of your academic and professional background.

Financing

·      To provide reference to institutional support and funding.

6. Manuscript Formatting

Submissions should be made exclusively in the following formats:

·       Word (.docx)

·       OpenOffice (.odt)

Submissions must be made using the provided templates.

The templates offer a set of styles for formatting the various parts of the article (e.g., RM_abstract, RM_text, RM_keywords) and should not be altered .

 

Required elements (articles)

Title

·       Maximum of 100 characters, including spaces.

·       Please provide the title in all required languages.

·       Do not use end-of-line punctuation.

Summary

·       Approximately 200 words

·       In the language of the article .

·       Include also Title , Abstract and Keywords, as per the template.

Keywords

·       Include 3 to 5 keywords separated by semicolons.

·       Start with a capital letter.

·       Also insert in other languages.

7. Images, Tables, Audio and Musical Examples

·       Insert next to the referenced text.

·       The illustrations should be referenced in the body of the text in parentheses (Fig. 5), clearly indicating their connection to the written argument.

·       All images, tables, audio, and musical examples should be numbered (e.g., “Fig. 1.”; “Table 2.”).

·       Do not reference the figure by locating it in the text (e.g., "see figure above") since figures may have their position moved for layout reasons.

·       Images should be submitted in closed formats such as .jpg, .tif, or .png, with a minimum resolution of 300 dpi.

·       Each image must have a caption (above the image) and a source indication (below the image), according to the template.

·       They must be legible and include full credits.

·       The author is responsible for the reproduction rights.

8. Funding Data

·       If necessary, include a section at the end of the text, before the bibliographic references, indicating any funding information or acknowledgments.

·       Enter the funding details (e.g., Funding Institution and application number) according to the requirements of your supporting institution.

9. Citations, Notes and References

9.1 Citations (according to NBR 10520:2023)

·       Systems must use the author-date system , according to ABNT standards.

·       Short quotations (up to three lines) should appear in the body of the text, between quotation marks.

·       Long quotations (more than three lines) should use block formatting, without quotation marks.

·       In the body of the text, titles of works (including works of art) should always appear in italics.

·       The period should be used to end the sentence, not the quotation.

·       In the body of the text, surnames appear in lowercase.

·       Latin expressions, such as apud and et al. , should be written in italics.

Examples:

·       (Fubini, 2008, p. 123) .

·       (Silva, 2012; Oliveira, 1999a) .

·       This is “an example of a direct quotation” (Silva et al ., 2012, p. 23).

9.2 Footnotes

·       Inserted automatically .

·       They should be brief .

·       Only bibliographic references that do not appear in the text should be included.

9.3 References (according to NBR 6023:2018 - confirmed in 2020)

·       The complete list of References should appear at the end of the text, in alphabetical order.

·       In the references, the titles of works or periodicals should always appear in italics . The subtitle (after the colon) should not be in bold.

·       Last names are capitalized.

·       Latin expressions such as apud and et al. should be written in italics.

Special cases:

·       [S. l.] to an unknown location

·       [sn] for unknown publisher

Scientific journal articles

LAST NAME, First Name. Article Title. Journal Title in italics , city of publication, v. [followed by volume number], n. [followed by issue number], p. [initial-final page], abbreviated month, year of publication. Add the link to the article whenever possible.

Articles published in the press

Last Name, First Name. Article Title. Newspaper or Magazine Name . City of Publication, day followed by abbreviated month. Year. Issue Number or Title of the Supplement, Section or Issue, initial-final page.

Article in Conference Proceedings

Last Name, First Name. Title of the work. In: Name of the event, event number, year of event, location. Title. Place of publication: Publisher, year of publication. Initial-final page of the work.

Sheet music published and available electronically.

"The essential elements are: composer, title, instrument for which it is intended (provided it is not part of the title), place of origin, publisher, date, and physical description. Example:

XENAKIS, Iannis. Aïs . Pour baryton amplifié, percussion solo and grand orchestra. Par is: Salabert, 1980. 1 sheet music.

Handwritten score

Last Name, First Name. Title of the Work . Identification. Place of publication: information about the type of graphic record of the work (specify the publisher and year of publication, if any), year of composition.

CD recording

Last Name, First Name. Recording Title . Recording Type. CD Serial Number (or state the origin of the recording. Ex: independent, homemade). Record Label Identification [if applicable], year [required]. If uncertain, add a question mark to the last digit. Ex: 198?].

Videos

Last Name, First Name. Video Title . Production (direction, conducting...) by Responsible Person's Name. Tape type, recording duration. Place of publication: Publisher or Record Label, year of publication.

Interviews

LAST NAME, First Name. Interview with [Interviewer's First and Last Name] on [Interview Date]. City. Record Type. Location.

Internet

LAST NAME, First Name. Title of the Work : subtitle [if any]. Publication Date. Available at: http://nome.do.site. Accessed on: June 20, 2012.

10. Ethics in Research

Articles in areas such as music therapy or that include sensitive data should:

·       Follow the Declaration of Helsinki .

·       Comply with applicable national laws .

·       Explicitly state the ethical procedures .

·       Include a declaration of responsibility with the submission .

11. Copyright and Declarations

After approval, you will be asked to:

·       Declaration of assignment of copyright for print and electronic publication;

·       Declaration of originality .

The authors retain the right to reuse the text in future works, with due reference to the original publication in Revista Música .

12. Final Observations

·       Supplementary materials (videos, links, etc.) should not identify authorship.

·       Templates must be used .

·       Failure to comply with the guidelines may result in the submission being rejected.

 

Submission Preparation Checklist

All submissions must meet the following requirements.

  • The contribution is original and unpublished, and is not being evaluated for publication by another journal; otherwise, it should be justified in "Comments to the editor".
  • URLs for referrals were reported when possible.
  • The submission file is in Microsoft Word or OpenOffice format.
  • The text follows the style standards and bibliographic requirements described in Guidelines for Authors, in the menu About the Journal.
  • Full text translations must include written authorizations from the authors and the publisher who owns the rights to the work in the original language.
  • The articles will eventually be submitted to the appreciation of specialists and electronic resources for detecting plagiarism.
  • Revista Música does not charge fees of any kind for the publication of scientific articles.
  • The text is formatted according to the template available on the Revista Música website; uses italic instead of underlining (except URL addresses); the figures and tables are inserted in the text, not at the end of the document in the form of attachments.
