Os estudos egiptológicos de Charles S. Peirce

Resumo

O artigo realiza um levantamento e apresenta uma análise crítica dos estudos de Peirce em egiptologia de 1885 a 1904, como documentados principalmente nos MSS 1227, 1228, 1244 e 1294. São examinados os estudos de Peirce e seus avanços em língua e escrita do Egito Faraônico, bem como suas análises das realizações científicas dos antigos egípcios. Entre os tópicos linguísticos em foco estão os pressupostos de Peirce a respeito da iconicidade da escrita hieroglífica, suas conjecturas sobre a origem das palavras indexicais a partir dos substantivos e suas hipóteses relativas à proximidade do egípcio antigo à protolíngua humana. O artigo delineia algumas das hipóteses de Peirce relacionando a estrutura do egípcio aos seus pressupostos fundamentais acerca da iconicidade e indexicalidade na língua. Ao que tudo indica, Peirce não só estava muito familiarizado com o estado da arte da egiptologia contemporânea, como também alcançou uma notável competência na língua egípcia e na sua escrita hieroglífica. Enquanto alguns dos insights de Peirce a respeito da língua e da civilização dos egípcios antigos são ainda sustentáveis hoje, outros refletem certos equívocos da erudição de seu tempo, que exigem correção à luz do estado da arte na egiptologia atual.
