Abstract

The problem of malnutrition in the State of S. Paulo, Brazil, is examined, focussing on prevalence and determinants, gaps in knowledge and research priorities. Although the available data leave much to be desired, all the surveys already undertaken show that the problem of malnutrition in the State is serious, and that protein-energy malnutrition and iron deficiency anemia are endemic. From a descriptive point of view, it is imperative to up-date the least estimates for the prevalence of malnurtition, now ten years old. It is also necessary to obtain regionalized data as an aid to the identification of critical areas to which particular attention is needed. From an analytical point of view, it is to be recommended that the relatively restricted universes which are being focussed on in studies of causality should be expanded, and, equally, that greater efforts with regard to research on immediate determinants and efficacy of specific intervention as well as on the multidisciplinary investigation of the basic causes of malnutrition should be made.
