Abstract

In this retrospective study of 126,968 in-patients at the Hospital das Clínicas of S. Paulo Medical School, S. Paulo, from 1979 to 1985, cysticercosis was diagnosed in 260 (0.2%) of them Epidemiological data obtained from these 260 patients showed a dose distribution with regard to sex, and the age group from 20 to 50 years old was the most affected (53.8%). Neurocysticercosis was the most frequent and the high rate (91.5%) was understood to be due to the characteristics of specific the patients studied. Despite the recent development of the diagnostic and therapeutic technology, the average length of hospitalization was 35 days and the rate of lethality 14.6%, pointing to the need for preventive measures on the part of public health programs.
