This article seeks to understand the perception of state health secretaries, their teachers, and directors about the contributions of state schools of public health to the Brazilian National Health System (SUS). As a qualitative research, it interviewed state health secretaries, as well as directors and teachers of these schools. The content of the interviews was analyzed based on Bardin’s framework. The schools’ contributions to the SUS were highlighted, demonstrating the strategic role they play, highlighting the provision of professionals trained in these schools and occupying SUS management positions; the technical support offered to municipalities; and the recognition of workers for the work developed by these schools. However, note that these institutions face challenges, especially insufficient financial and human resources. The schools are strategic for SUS, and are fundamental instruments for maintaining the policy of continuous health education and essential for qualifying the health workforce. The difficulties reported show the need to actually prioritize the policy of continuous education and the professional qualification policy aimed at the health worker.
