In a society where consumption has become one of the central pillars for the construction of an identity and a sense of “I”, the film The Substance metaphorically exposes the decline of an individual’s sense of self-worth as he or she fails to meet the image-based social expectations, and how the consumer industry finds, in this scenario, a market to be explored. This paper aims to draw a parallel between the topics addressed by the film and the concepts related to consumption and contemporary identity self-construction presented by Bauman in his works.
