A Public Library of Science, editora científica sem fins lucrativos, foi criada no início dos anos 2000 com o objetivo de publicar revistas de acesso livre e de alta qualidade.

A PLOS é responsável pela publicação de sete revistas científicas: PLOS One, PLOS Biology, PLOS Medicine, PLOS Computational Biology, PLOS Genetics, PLOS Pathogens e PLOS Neglected Tropical Diseases.

Em relação ao Fator de Impacto, registrado no Journal Citations Report, os números são os seguintes: PLOS One (4.092), PLOS Biology (11.452), PLOS Medicine (16.269), PLOS Computational Biology (5.215), PLOS Genetics (8.694), PLOS Pathogens (9.127) e PLOS Neglected Tropical Diseases (4.716).

O modelo de negócio da editora PLOS é baseado em taxas de publicação cobradas dos autores e acesso gratuito para os leitores de todo o mundo. Os direitos autorais (copyright) dos artigos permanecem com os autores, que deverão somente concordar com a distribuição gratuita pela Internet pela PLOS.

Sobre os Palestrantes

Cory Lee Mann– professional biographical summary: for public dissemination

Cory Mann is the Publications Manager for PLOS Pathogens, one of seven Open Access journals run by PLOS. He manages the daily editorial operations of the journal, including overseeing the work-flow of staff and resolving publication ethics concerns. He also acts as the main point of contact between the volunteer Editors-in-Chief and the organization, representing the editor’s interests internally to other departments and externally to the community at large. Prior to working for PLOS Pathogens, Cory also worked on the editorial team for PLOS ONE. His interest in Open
Access and the dissemination of scientific research arose while working in Interlibrary Loan administration for the McHenry Library at the University of California, Santa Cruz, where he graduated with a B.A. in Environmental Studies. He is excited to return to Brazil to learn more about the Brazilian scientific community and to discuss Open Access as an international movement.

Gina Maria Alvino – professional biographical summary: for public dissemination

Gina Alvino, PhD currently serves as the Senior Publications Assistant for PLOS Pathogens in San Francisco, California. Gina oversees all press and social media activities for the journal; manages issues related to human and animal research ethics and proficiently operates the online submission system, Editorial Manager, to facilitate the peer review process for the journal. Prior to her time at PLOS Pathogens Gina earned a Masters and PhD in Animal Biology (specialization: animal behavior and stress physiology) from the University of California, Davis. She has a passion for scientific writing and editing and is an avid supporter of Open Access publishing. Gina is extremely happy to visit São Paulo and speak with the academic and Open Access communities about PLOS’s activities and international mission.
