SOCIO-ENVIRONMENTAL ANALYSIS OF THE HIGH COTINGUIBA RIVER SUB-BASIN: SUBSIDIES TO HYDROGRAPHIC BASIN PLANNING AND MANAGEMENT

Abstract

Among the basins that form Sergipe´s river basin, upper Contiguiba´s is the mains ones, not only for its magnitude, as well as for the geoeconomic importance throughout the area. Inserted substantially in the county of Areia Branca, State of Sergipe, upper Cotinguiba´s basin has suffered environmental degradations caused by human activities such as accelerated degradation of springs nearby agricultural and extractive activities without management practices and environmental preservation. Starting from this problem and considering that the population of a rvier basin presses the natural resources, a surveying of its people aspects was necessary. Then, this paper characterized the physical and socioeconomic system of the upper sub-basin and environmental changes that toook place last years, highlighting aspects related to water and land use.
