The objective of this paper will be to explain Meschonychian thought in its attempt to expand the limits of structuralism by overcoming semiotic discourse through the concept of rhythm. We will raise the hypothesis, in Meschonnic's terms, that the semiotic theory, which understands language as a discontinuous system of signs, ends up conceiving it rigidly. Also, by focusing on the concept of rhythm and its relationship with the semantic and therefore subjectifying dimension of language, we will draw an idea of language in its full discursive power opened to presence. Finally, it will be analysed how the untimely poem “Rios sem discurso” by the Brazilian poet Joao Cabral de Melo Neto can contribute to this discussion.
