Originated from different cultural background and yet sharing the same historical period, American writer J. D. Salinger (1919-2010) and Brazilian Antonio Carlos Villaça (1928-2005) were both radical critics of the establishment to which they belonged. Transgressors, they viewed social institutions as places they could not fit in, foreseing flight as a possibility of inner search and self-expression. This paper aims at discussing the discourse that these authors would generate from the starting point of their experience with confining social institutions such as school, family, mental health hospital, and monastery. Results indicate that a persistent inner search and persue of truth represent an attempt to reach the sacred, revealing in both writers the hibrid characteristic of saint and insane.
