Rumo a uma sociedade melhor: uma análise da agenda de reformas econômicas de J. S. Mill

Resumo

O artigo tem como objetivo analisar a agenda de reformas econômicas apresentada por J.S.Mill aos seus conterrâneos à luz de sua visão do funcionamento das instituições sociais. Argumenta-se, por um lado, que a preocupação do autor com o papel das instituições na manutenção da coesão social fez do gradualismo uma marca registrada do seu pensamento. Argumenta-se, por outro, que, apesar do caráter localizado e pontual das reformas propostas, Mill desejava promover o progresso social e modificar de forma significativa a sociedade vigente. As reformas deveriam pavimentar o caminho para um arranjo social superior com contornos bastante diferentes daqueles prevalecentes em sua época.
