Abstract

Chemotherapy may negatively influence the functional capacity and quality of life of oncology patients.  The purpose of the study was to assess the health and disability in patients undergoing chemotherapy. A cross-sectional study was conducted with 117 oncology patients undergoing chemotherapy. The Brazilian version 36-item of World Health Organization Disability Assessment Schedule (WHODAS 2.0) and the Medical Outcome Survey Short-Form 36 (SF-36) were used. The patients were classified according to tumor location, diagnosis time and age. Spearman´s correlation was performed to verify the correlation between health and disability with quality of life. The greatest disability was observed in the "life activities" domain and the least impairment was observed in the "getting along" domain. No differences were observed according to the tumor location. The time of diagnosis and age did not show homogeneity in the results. There were few correlations between health and disability with quality of life. The sample showed a slight impairment in health and disability. Commitments are not influenced by tumor location, diagnosis time and age, and are not correlated with patient's quality of life.
