Abstract

This paper reviews the literature on the active mechanism and effects of botulinum toxin in decreasing the spasticity in upper and lower limbs, in children with cerebral palsy and adults who suffered stroke. The studies showed the positive effect of the botulinum toxin type A in reducing spasticity
and, when associated with physical and occupational therapy interventions, it is possible to observe improvements in functional performance. The effect of
botulinum toxin type A has limited duration and it is necessary for repeated injections for the effect to be maintained.
