Abstract

This article is part of astudywherethe followingdinnensions for the analysis ofthe dwelling were proposed: symbol; corporality; temporality; poetics; brazility - based on three case studies of urban popular houses, rural houses and homeless dwvellings. In this article I propose the study of the dwelling as symbolic of mothering, that is, as a substitute of a sociohistorica~ly
constructed uterus. The mother-child relationship is seen as the origin ofthe syrnbolic ability understood as the rejoint of previously separated parts. This conception implicates in psychological
functions associated to magical protection, leading to a supposed religious-mythical origin of the human habitare.
