This paper aims to reflect about the contribution of the British researcher George Newport (1803-1854) to the elucidation of a question broadly investigated be-tween the 17th and 19th centuries: the role of the components of male semen in repro-duction. After presenting some information on the scientific biography of this re-searcher, it follows a discussion of his work “On the Impregnation of the Ovum in the Amphibia” (1851). The analysis will emphasize the experiments done to investigate the precise role of the spermatozoa and of the fluid part of semen in the fecundation of oocytes, indicating the author’s awareness of the contribution of his study to the knowledge about animal reproduction.Downloads
