Abstract

Translation of a letter from the philosopher George Berkeley, originally published in the Philosophical Transactions, official bulletin of the Royal Society, London, in October 1717. In the excerpt of the letter here translated about the eruptions of Vesuvius Berkeley, he proves to be a curious and accurate observer. Above all, the literary quality of his text is remarkable, a characteristic that his previous works, especially the Three dialogues between Hylas and Philonous, of 1713, had already revealed. This is perhaps one of the main reasons that make the letter a historical-scientific document of permanent interest.
