This essay (1957) by the poet Franco Fortini (1917-1994) is the first of a long reflection on poetic meter and rhythm. Taking in consideration the relationship between lyric poetry and society, he seeks to characterize a new metrical sensibility that is the result of the coexistence of the traditional metrical system and the free verse.
