Resumen

The urban parks of São Paulo show a wide range of shapes, sizes and functions. Their spatial and temporal distribution does not follow a clear rule either. Those facts led us, at first, to search for the meaning of this kind of public facility named "park", and so to look for clues that could explain why our parks are where they are. We started investigating the ownership of the areas that became parks. This paper does not provide the answer to our main question yet, but shows that, since the 1980, most of our parks originated from green areas that land developers had to give the municipality by the time they split up the land to sell urban plots. This fact points out that the opportunities created by the urban legislation of land subdivision have provided areas for urban parks
