Abstract

Companies operating in emerging economies use technology transfers as a development mechanism of their indigenous technological capability. Thus, can generate innovations and insert itself in a competitive market. In this context, the purpose of this paper is to construct a measurement system, whose indicators allow measuring the indigenous technological capability in pharmaceutical companies. Based on the theoretical reference, two categories of technological capability were considered capable of measuring this capability. They are capability in R & D / innovation and capability in knowledge / human resources. A case study to verify the suitability of this measuring system to the proposal of this article was undertaken in a pharmaceutical immunobiologicals producer company, linked to the Health Ministry. The findings suggested that indicators created to the measurement system are appropriate to measure this kind of technological capability. Furthermore, due to the fact the company studied has its growth based on technology transfers, it showed that such technology transfers contributed to promote the company’s indigenous technological capability. This study still revealed that there was evolution of the main points assessed, however, also highlighted some points that need further attention, in order to have a better use of these technology transfers to improve  the company’s indigenous technology capability.
