Abstract

Nowadays, the authors have shown great interest in understanding how the organizational strategy practice has been developed. Considering this tendency, this article describes how the strategic formulation process occurs in an organization of the third sector. SESC/SC (Comercial Social Service in Santa Catarina). The creation of the strategy in this under studying organization is analyzed based in the referential proposed by Whittington (2002), who analyzed 2 main dimensions: the waited results with the strategies and the process that involves it. The procedure of the research is characterized by a studying case with a qualitative and descriptive character. Primer data were used, which were got from non-structured, focalized interviews with 16 people from the formal and informal dominate coalition of the organization. Based on the collected data, it was possible to observe that, in this researched organization, the reasons that lead to the establishment of the strategy are not only related to economical aspects. Concerning the strategy formulation, Whittington´s (2002) classic vision predominated, through the usage of a strategic plan.
