Abstract

The goal of this study is to show that natural environment evaluations should be conducted towards integrated and comprehensive results, and that within physical geography "landscape physiology" contributes to this methodological approach. To get back this approach we comment on a study cited as an example of this methodology in the "Landscape physiology" classes within the Geography undergraduate course at USP. The paper published in 1949 evaluates mass movements episodes in Paraíba valley, triggered by an exceptional rainfall event..We compare this episode with a similar event in the Mantiqueira region during 2000, along São Paulo, Minas Gerais and Rio de Janeiro borders. Other examples are included, as the landslides on the serra do Mar escarpment in Caraguatatuba in 1967.The study emphasizes the complex relationship between society and natural environment in the tropics that can lead to great natural disasters with serious human
implications.
