Abstract

This article consists of a comparative study between the English philologist J. R. R. Tolkien’s concept of “fairy-story” and the notion of “storytelling” employed by the German critic Walter Benjamin, demonstrating the degree of affinity between them. To do so, two articles constitute the core discussion: Tolkien’s conference On Fairy-Stories and Benjamin’s classic essay titled The Storyteller. From the analysis of similarities and differences between fairy-stories and storytelling — focusing on the association between fantastic literature and young readers, on the capacity of such stories to provide one with counsel and their relationship with the concepts of myth and nature — it was possible to determine how much these terms overlap, even though there is no evidence that either author influenced each other’s work. Therefore, it is demonstrated that contrary to what Benjamin claimed in his article, the form of communication contrived by the storyteller did not disappear in the 20th century, but experienced a literary renewal in the hands of authors like Tolkien, who preserved some characteristics of storytelling in contemporary fairy-stories.
