Abstract

This article discusses how complex it is to carry out a study assessing the impactof Brazilian pre-salt oil drilling on health. Then, it focuses on reviewing theliterature published and indexed on Web of Science on “oil spill” and “healthimpacts” topics. A total of 64 scientific articles published from 1989 to 2012and containing those keywords were analyzed. Such studies indicate that thereare short and long-term effects on human health; and they include impactson mental and psychological health, skin and eye lesions, nausea, headache, and even cancer risks, endocrine disruption, and potential hazards to thereproductive system of both men and women.
