Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to stress the strategic importance of education for the economic and social development of Brazil. Special attention is given to the role of a good quality education to enhance the labor productivity in the country, which has been stagnant for many years. The average productivity of the Brazilian workers is no more than 20% of the productivity of that of the American workers. The rapid incorporation of modern technologies into the production systems is raising the demand for workers well prepared in their occupations and also adequately trained in the use of language, mathematics and general knowledge. Modern work is more and more team-oriented, which requires a good preparation.
