Abstract

In a city known for its chaotic traffic and record jams, reported almost daily by all Brazilian communication vehicles, hundreds of traffic accidents are registred each day. According to the Brazilian Association of Manufacturers of Motorcycles, mopeds, motor scooter, Bicycles and Similar (ABRACICLO), the market for motorcycles grew 27.3% in the first nine months of 2007, compared to the same period of 2006. Today, that number is even higher and it is expected to increase. Due to the representation of traffic accidents in São Paulo, we analyzed the evolution of all the victims of traffic accidents involving motorcycles (194 patients) treated in the Emergency Room of the Hospital of the Faculty of Medicine, University of São Paulo (FMUSP), in the period from February 01, 2006 to June 30, 2007 and identified the perception of the doctors responsible for care of the Emergency Room of Surgery on the effects of the motorcycle accidents in the routine of the emergency room.
