Abstract

In this article we attempt to discuss the notion of potentiality in the context of modal interpretations (MI) of quantum mechanics. For this purpose we shall analyze the meaning of the notion of quantum possibility in the orthodox formalism of quantum mechanics following the distinction between modal interpretations which start from metaphysical principles (MIMP) and modal interpretations which start from the mathematical formalism (MIMF). Within this context we discuss the importance of empiricist and realist positions, and propose to advance towards a position that we name metaphysical constructivism. Finally, we propose the introduction of the notion of ontological potentiality -based on the Aristotelian concept of rational potentiality- as a conceptual scheme which can allow us to provide a coherent account of the non-standard idea of possibility present within the MI.
