Abstract

The short story "The Horse Dealer's Daughter" (1918), by D. H. Lawrence, does not follow the perspective of the most experimental narrative projects in terms of narrative structure of the period of its publication. In this paper, we will investigate how the director/translator Robert Burgos, in the film The Horse Dealer's Daughter (1983), dealt with this text on screen and which were the main translation strategies used to represent polemic themes of this particular literary universe in the cinema, especially regarding the theme of the individual and the social. As theoretical background, we will use the idea of translation as a type of rewriting (Lefevere 2007); the principle of film adaptation as translation (Cattrysse 2014); and questions about representation (Shohat and Stam 2006).
