Abstract

Rather than aspects of the military intervention theories, the author presents in this paper facts related to the rupture of civilian power and of democratic institutions in Nigeria, caused by the military take over in 1993. He approaches militarism as the arbiter of political disputes in that country, evaluating thre estages of the process: the July 1993 elections, the “Interim National Govenment" (ING), and what he calls the "messianic instincts" of the military junta.
